A day in the life of an Artist in Residence - Lida Valmé

I arrived on Monday 15.1. I took the first day to get settled and acquainted with the space and materials at my disposal. I then created a daily routine for myself where I would wake at 6.30, go outside to meditate and do yoga, then return to the house and have breakfast. Then, I would do exercise before getting into the studio any time between 9 and 10.30.

Daytimes were reserved for working in the studio.

During breaks I would walk outside, and read books. Then, in the evening at around 17.30-18.30 I would stop working and wind down. Relax by reading some books that are part of the wonderful library in the studio. I focused on mindfulness, presence, awareness, and meditation during my days, in and out of the studio. These themes also became present in my practice with the clay.

Saturdays afternoons were reserved for teaching the kids with Boniface, which was absolutely wonderful, inspiring, and life giving. They enjoyed working with clay. The first Saturday we focused on claywork, the second being a class where children could choose between painting, beadwork, and clay.

I had the privilege to explore Nanyuki as well, including visiting Nanyuki ceramics. I also had two studio visits with Boniface Maina, which were very fruitful for the both of us in terms of our artistic practices.

I would absolutely recommend the Orkedi art residence to anyone interested in experiencing a fruitful art residency with much to offer. I felt very supported and taken care of.

The nature and quiet, balancing environment promotes well being and inner peace, which translated into my artistic practice during the residency. I hope and intend to carry this energy back into the city.

It was a true honour and pleasure to participate in this residency - it was difficult to leave. I will be back, God willing!
